MCS Radio Show Recap – Saturday, June 24th, 2017

Okay.  So I’m churning these show recaps out fairly quickly.  There’s usually quite a bit of post-show work to get done after each show and sometimes schedules don’t allow time to get some tasks completed.  I thank you all for your patience and for popping by the blog to see what’s up.   I ask you not just listen to the radio show but also interact by chiming in on the Cafe Talk.  Generally, you can call in around 1:30pm CDT every Saturday to chime in OR go to Facebook or Twitter to comment.  You can also send an email response to marilynscafesociety@yahoo.com.  Here’s the Cafe Talk for this show.

Cafe Talk:  When was the last time you did something for the very first time; and what was it?

1st Hour- This Day in History and Top News:

On this day in history we shared…

In 1966 the United States Senate voted 76-0 for the passage of what became the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

The longest tennis match occurred in 2010.

And wrapping up Black Music History month, I noted that in 1978,  Janice Marie Johnson led “A Taste of Honey” onto the #1 spot on the charts with hit song “Boogie Oogie Oogie”.  Also, in 1989, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston’s duet “It Isn’t, It Wasn’t, It Ain’t Never Gonna Be” was released.  Take a listen–  Taste of Honey  and Aretha and Whitney.

In Top News, I talked briefly about the newly unveiled Republican Senate draft of the new healthcare bill.  Democrats and some Republicans have gone on record to say that the proposed bill needs more work.  Also, former online giant, Etsy, has announced more job cuts to come this year.   Lastly, looking ahead to the July 4th holiday, AAA Motor Club is reporting this travel season to be the highest in years due to low gas prices.

Cafe Talk must of been quite challenging for listeners because we didn’t comments on social media or calls.  In fact, it took some time for me to come up with something!  I shared the first time that I used my radio show as a platform to share my singing voice. Brianna shared her experience on Windy City Live and Soul talked about her experience on the radio.

Before closing out the first hour of the show, Brianna shared “What’s Trending on Social Media”.  The Jimmy Butler trade and Google no longer scanning emails were tops.

2nd Hour – Entertainment News

Surprisingly, I’m still hanging in there with the Bachelorette tv show so I shared my spin on what happened in the last episode.  Queen Sugar was also an entertainment topic, especially the fact that Ava Durvernay is committed to creating diversity in filmmaking.  Brianna shared some of the names of celebrities that will receive a Hollywood Star.  We reminded everyone to check out the BET Awards on Sunday and chatted about the two girl flicks that hit the big screen this weekend, Girl’s Trip and Rough Night.    Here’s the link.

For this week’s Passion for Fashion, I taught everyone how to achieve their “best summer glow”. Remember, it’s important to stay hydrated and moisturize!  Also, no matter your skin color or tone, if you spend a lot of time in the sun, you must wear sunscreen.  Check out more here.

Praise leader and singer, Valerie Singleton stopped by to let everyone know that she will be singing at the Taste of Joliet on Sunday, June 25th.  She also talked about growing up in Joliet and being the daughter of the late, Reverend, Dr. Isaac Singleton. Rev. Genevieve Brown was with her.  It was really good to see her.  Here’s picture of us all glowing.

Still playing catch up on this blogsite!  This show aired Father’s Day weekend.  I hope all the Fathers had a wonderful day; and that everyone enjoyed their father or father figure.Happy-Fathers-Day-Images-Download

Checkout what you missed…

Cafe Talk:  What is your top 3 list of special memories with your father or father figure?

1st Hour- This Day in History and Top News:

I wasn’t feeling my best so Soul and Brianna primarily handled the “this day in history” segment and others.  Here’s what was shared…

The Statue of Liberty was delivered to the U. S. on this day in 1885.

The first Kidney Transplant happened in Chicago, Illinois on 1950 on this day.

In tribute to the fathers and Black Music History month, I featured James Brown, the God Father of Soul’s hit song, Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”.  Take a listen here.

In Top News, they reported on the news story about the little boy that was left on the beach in Chicago and the interesting story about “Backup Life on Earth”.   Soul and Brianna challenged fathers to stepped up and be involved in their children’s lives in a positive way.  She also talked about men who have numerous children by different women.  During the “Backup Life on Earth” talk, they chatted about living life in space and on Mars.

Cafe Talk pretty much closed out the hour.  We all shared our own top personal memories that we have of our fathers.  Brianna shared that her father has passed on but she has many memories of him.  Soul talked about her special memories; and I shared how I love my father’s choice of music, Jazz and how he played it all the time while we were growing up and continues to do so to this day.  Rashad, who joined me again in the studio, shared that his grandparents raised him.

2nd Hour – Entertainment News

GSWCongratsimages

We chatted more about the NBA Finals and sent congratulations out to the Golden State Warriors and Kevin Durant who was named MVP.  What a game!!!  We also speculated on the reason why Rachel Lindsay, the Bachelorette, would be there!  Brianna highlighted all the NBA dads and we noted that George Clooney has recently become a father!  Brianna also announced Hollywood’s hottest dads which included Ryan Gosling, Kanye West, and more!  Here’s the link.

Passion for Fashion was all about Men’s Summer Must Haves that includes the classic polo shirt, fly casual sneakers, and a gold or silver message bracelet.  Go to essence.com, June issue for visuals.  Soul shared the best movies to checkout for Father’s Day and noted that the Floyd Mayweather tickets are hot items to get for Father’s Day too.

Before wrapping up the show, Brianna shared what’s trending on social media.  And then we enjoyed another Soulbalm Says.  I shared a thought-provoking quote from Dr. Martin L. King Jr.,  “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools”.

MCS Radio Show Recap- Saturday, June 10th, 2017

Hey here’s what you missed a few weeks ago…

Cafe Talk:  Cleveland Cavaliers or Golden State Warriors?  And why?

1st Hour – This Day in History and Top News:

Soul and Brianna were off so I tackled the “this day in history” segment solo.

In 1752, Benjamin Franklin collected an electrical charge in a Leyden jar when a kite he was flying was struck by lightning.

In 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in Akron, Ohio.

In 1977, a statement against apartheid from Nelson Mandela was smuggled out of Robben Island prison.

In 2004, Ray Charles, a 12 time Grammy winning singer-pianist and bluesman died at his home in Beverly Hills, California.

Due to the extended “This Day in History” segment, Top News was skipped.  My in-studio guest, comedian Rashad Clarke, went straight to Cafe Talk after a break,  Take a listen here.   Other topics to follow included “Texting Slang that Parents Should Know” and “White Foods that are Healthy for you”.

Cafe Talk closed out the hour.  We each shared our own personal responses and shared some responses from social media and the callers.

2nd Hour – Entertainment News

Rashad Clarke and Ny Hollywood joined me during Entertainment Talk regarding the Bachelorette tv show; Daytime Divas, Queen Sugar, and more.  Of course, Ny snagged an interview with Ms. Oprah Winfrey and others.  Here’s the link.

Passion for Fashion was all about Summer Must Haves.  And, before wrapping up the show, we noted the passing of Adam West, TV’s Batman.

Remember to tune in next Saturday for another edition of Marilyn’s Cafe Society Radio Show.  And visit www.marilynscafesociety.com.  Peace.

MCS Radio Show Recap – Saturday, June 3rd, 2017

Hi and Happy Wednesday!  I hope that you’re having a wonderful week so far!  Before you know it the weekend will be here; and for those in the Chicagoland area I hear it’s going to be a scorcher with temps in the 90s.

hotweather

So, as I update the blog, I’m also watching the NBA finals, game 3.  Cleveland has home court advantage and unlike the previous games, this one is close!  Be sure to tune into the radio on Saturday for my commentary on this series!!

Okay.  If you missed this past Saturday’s show, here’s what you missed…

Cafe Talk:  What was the craziest, most jaw dropping thing that your child ever said or done?

1st Hour – This Day in History and Top News:

Soul, Brianna, and I each shared an interesting “this day in history” fact.  Listeners learned about the 1943 Zoot Suit riots that kicked off after a group of sailors reported being attacked by a group of Mexican Americans; the first American space walk by Gemini IV Astronaut, Ed White which lasted 23 minutes; and the Democratic party nomination of then, U.S. Senator, Barack Obama in 2008 on the last day of the party’s primary season.   Regrettably, we don’t have audio of this broadcast due to a technical snafu.  If it’s retrieved from the archives soon, we’ll get it posted to the website.

During Top News, we updated listeners on the latest news about the terrorist attack at the Arianna Grande concert in Manchester England where 22 people were killed. Another big story hitting the headlines was the Kathy Griffin debacle.  We chimed in and all agreed that she crossed the comedic line when she posted a picture of herself holding a picture of a beheaded Donald Trump who happens to be President of the United States of America.  Do we believe that she will bounce back after losing her New Year’s Eve gig with CNN, some endorsements, and comedy bookings?? Absolutely! Speaking of Donald Trump.  What was going on with him when he posted a tweet on Twitter referencing “…negative press covfefe…”?  Covfefe???  Is this a new word that will be added to Webster’s dictionary at the end of the year?  I personally believe that he or his social media person meant to say “coverage” but by the time they noticed the typo the number of retweets were so high that they just went with it!  Anyway, we had a good time speculating what a covfefe could be or what it means and how to pronounce it!  Does fries come with that covfefe?  Or  may I have coffee or tea with an order of covfefe?  Or, meet my new pet, Covfefe!  Ok, you get the picture.  Lastly, we talked about another business report that predicts that the future of brick and mortar retail stores doesn’t look good. Apparently, every year, the number of online shoppers increase.  I was the only person in-studio  who still prefers and enjoys going into the stores and malls to shop.

Cafe Talk closed out the hour.  We each shared our own personal responses and shared some responses from social media and the callers.

2nd Hour – Entertainment News

I shared highlights from the Billboard Awards that aired a couple of Sundays ago. Hosts Ludacris and Vanessa Hudgens did a pretty good job.  Loved the performance by John Legend and Florida Georgia Line.  Congratulations to Cher on receiving the Billboard Icon Award and congratulation to Drake for now holding the BBMA record with 13 awards.  Adele previously held it with 12 awards.  We briefly chatted about the winner of DWTS, Rashad Jennings, and how close Normani Kordei and David Ross got to winning.    I got into a little more pop culture by reporting how I actually watched weeks 1 and 2 of the Bachelorette.  Much like Rachel Lindsay, the Bachelorette, I was very entertained.   As I watched, I thought about the song called, “It’s Raining Men, Hallelujah!”  Here’s the link to the song recorded by the Weather Girls. https://dailymotion.com/video/x1hvge

I’m going to try my best to stay with the Bachelorette until the end.  Before closing the segment, Brianna and Soul talked about Game 1 of the NBA Finals and how Rihanna (who is a Cavaliers fan) made headlines by allegedly having a non-verbal run-in with Kevin Durant of the Warriors.  This discussion opened the door for me to verbally express that I’m torn this year between the East Coast and West Coast teams–mainly because Kevin Durant has become a Golden State Warrior.  I really want to see him get a ring!  Under normal circumstances, I always root for the East Coast Conference champions.  By the way, this Game 3 is a doozie!  Right now its 4th quarter and Cleveland is leading by 6 pts.

Brianna presented Passion for Fashion.  It was all about the history of the bikini or 2 piece.   Here’s a few samples…

I joked that in about six months I will post a picture from a beach somewhere wearing one.  Which style do you think I should rock?  Comment here.

Before closing the show, we chatted about the other comedian/political pundit “situation” that made news and was currently trending on social media during the broadcast.  Yes, Bill Maher!  He dropped the “N” word while talking to a senator from Nebraska during his Real Talk with Bill Maher television show that airs on HBO.  Here you go.  https://youtu.be/BZCFYD3Vs4I  Take a listen.  He issued an apology.  Some want him fired and others excuse him.  What to you think?

Oh goodness.  That’s it.  Soul closed the show with a beautiful Soulbalm Says.  Again, regrettably, we don’t have audio at this time so you’ll just have to take my word.  Or go to souliciouswe.wordpress.com.  She may have it posted there.

Remember to tune in this coming Saturday for another edition of Marilyn’s Cafe Society Radio Show.  And visit www.marilynscafesociety.com.  Peace.
