No Pain. No Gain?

I am back friends!!!  Yes!  Back to movement.  Back to living life.  Back to this blog!   I trust that you all are doing good.  Well, the limp is gone.  The pain is gone.  And, I want to say that the treadmill is gone too but I won’t because I realize that the pain that I experienced was not the treadmill’s doing.  You know how we (human beings) do.  We always try to blame someone/something else for our mistakes, mishaps, mess ups, blunders, problems, and pain.  Yep, even me.  My first thought when I began to feel the pain from my treadmill workout last week was “that damn treadmill has to go”!!!

What a minute. Friends, I had to check myself!   Was I really going to blame the inanimate treadmill for the pain??!!  No!  I knew better!  I quickly realized and acknowledged that I caused the pain.  Yes, I decided to increase my daily walk from 2.5 to 3 miles per hour bypassing the incremental increases that I’d been using over the past few months.  You remember that I shared with you all last week how my confidence was through the roof.  This working out thing is not new to me so I expected to feel some discomfort but I did not expect to experience excruciating pain!

The second thought that came to mind was in the form of a question, “Should I have pushed myself?”  Hence, last week’s blog title.  And, within the body of that blog, I referenced an old expression “No Pain. No Gain” which happens to be today’s blog title.  As soon as I wrote the phrase last week, I questioned it.  Is this so?  Is this based on scripture?  Does gain really require pain?  What will I gain from this pain?

While recuperating over the last week, I searched for answers.  I discovered that others have had the same question and they have found biblical scriptures that one can say supports the expression, “No Pain. No Gain”.  The Book of Hebrews has quite a few.  And even greater than that is the example of Jesus’s crucifixion, death, and resurrection. The pain (Jesus’s suffering and death).  The Gain (Jesus’s gift of life and blessings to us).  Again, this is all very general for the sake of the blog but I pray that you get the gist of it all.  Now, I must say that the gain that I have received due to the pain that I experienced includes, burned calories, more defined leg muscle, and *wait for it* content for last week’s and this blog.  Was the excruciating pain necessary?  Absolutely not!  Had I paced myself better, I would have only experienced what I consider slight discomfort.  Unnecessary pain can and should be avoided!

Nevertheless, friends, the next time you find yourself experiencing mild, moderate, or extreme pain or discomfort in any area of your life, don’t fall into the blame game (reflect and if necessary, check yourself); and then look for the gain, the reward, the lesson, the blessing.  Remember, All things work together for the good of those who love God….  Amen.  And so it is!

Push Yourself?

Hello Friends!  I greet you today while experiencing pain in my left thigh.  I’m alternating heat and ice packs to the area when I’m not limping around the house to do…whatever!  Okay.  I hear you asking, Marilyn, what on earth did you do?  Why are you having pain in your thigh?

Here’s the answer.  Drum roll please…  Remember last week, I shared that one of the activities that I do to de-stress is to walk?  And I then shared that I have increased my daily walks to 2.5 miles per hour, per day?  Well yesterday morning, I decided to increase my walk to 3 miles per hour, per day in the spirit of “pushing myself”.   Yessss, I visualized myself in that iconic scene in the Rocky movie when Sylvester Stallone is climbing the stairs!!!  LoL!!!  My self talk was “You got this Marilyn”!  “You go girl”!!  “You can do it”!!!  “Help me Lord” “Come on. Push Yourself”!!!  And I did!!!  I did it!!!  Yay me?!!!  Ouch….

You all, the moral of this story is, yes, we should “Push Ourselves” in exercise and life.  In fact, we must, so that we can get to the next level.  You know, experience a break-through.  And, yes, that push may sometimes be uncomfortable or in this specific case down right painful.  But, as the old saying goes, “no pain, no gain”.  Now, of course, we don’t want to seriously hurt ourselves in our efforts to move to the next level. Friends, what I’ve learned from this pain that I’m feeling right now is that I have to proceed gradually in my quest to hit the 3 miles per hour, per day goal.  No, no, no. I will not get discouraged and not try it again.  I will just pace myself better.

Okay, that’s it for today.  I’m going to go limp (I mean) walk through this pain (pray for me) so that I can get some things done.  I think I may go get a pineapple to eat (I really don’t enjoy them) because they have a dietary supplement called bromelain. Bromelain reduces muscle pain and swelling among other things. Anyway, I encourage you to continue to “Push Yourself” in all areas of your life.  With God, all things are possible.  Amen.  And so it is!

(Side note:  The timing could not have been better for my friends from the WNBA to reach out in an effort to encourage girls to “push” themselves by joining this program.  Check it out below.)

He Whispered…

…you are too Blessed to be stressed.  Friends, how are you?  I trust that you are not allowing this election period to stress you!  And if you are, I am here to remind you as my Heavenly Father reminded me… You are too Blessed to be stressed!

Like millions of Americans and others, I am very curious to know the election results and I am patiently waiting to hear the announcement.  I only check into the news channels every 2 to 3 hours and limit the watch time.  As I continue to work on Saturday’s show and other aspects of my work, I have been listening to relaxing music.  I have increased my daily walks to 2.5 miles per day this week.  My daily prayer and devotional time have been key as well.

My friends, this blog is short and sweet. Let’s walk in God’s confidence and know that no matter what the outcome of this election, we are indeed “too Blessed”.  He whispered it. Amen.  And so it is!

(Side note:  If you truly believe it, let’s get the t-shirt.  Click here .)
