Maestra!

Hello!  How are you?  Happy Spring and Happy May!  It’s been a minute since I blogged, so I thought that I’d pop in today to share this story with you.

While recently shopping, a little person called me “Maestra” several times.  Every time our paths crossed going up and down the grocery aisle, he’d point at me and yell “Maestra” all while smiling and then waving!  Since my knowledge of the Spanish language is limited, I didn’t know what he was calling me but naturally assumed that whatever “Maestra” meant, it had to be positive and good.  I hoped.

Well, after about the fifth time, I stopped and greeted his mother who was pushing him in a stroller and asked her what he was saying.  She, too, smiled and responded (while talking over the toddler’s continuous calls to me, “Maestra, Maestra”) he’s calling you teacher!  “Maestra” means teacher in Spanish”.  I asked if I looked like his teacher, and she said ‘No!  He just turned 3 years old and hasn’t started school yet!  Meanwhile, he’s still calling me “Maestra, Maestra” so I chatted with him a bit and thanked him for thinking of me as teacher.  Before continuing on with my shopping, I asked his mother how he learned the word “Maestra” and she informed me that she talks with him about going to school and having a teacher.  She also said that he watches children’s television programs and may have learned from them as well.

I shared this story because it struck me.  As a child, I always had to be the teacher when playing school with playmates.  As a young adult, my mother always called me a teacher.  Also, I learned several decades ago that one of my dominant spiritual gifts was teacher.  Most of my life experiences (work, volunteering, etc.) have required me to operate in that gift of teaching, informing, instructing, etc.  You all, God has a way of showing us that he is indeed REAL – even through children; and guess what?  In a couple different ways that child was my teacher!  One small way is that I now know that Maestra means teacher.

Continue to be safe and well, my friends.  Remember to strengthen your immune system by eating healthily and taking a good multi-vitamin; wear your mask and watch your distance in very public places; and continue to wash your hands often.  In Jesus Name.  Amen.  And, So It Is.
